HISTORY: The African Ashanti Akua'ba Fertility Doll originates from Ghana but can be found in many other African countries. It is believed to help with fertility and health of the child. Women and girls would carry these with them, sometimes tied two their waist or backs. Upon the realization of her dream, the birth of a child, the doll is placed in a revered position in the family shrine. Among the Asante the line of descent passes through the female, so women are expected to bear female children to continue this line. If a woman does not conceive, she consults a priest who supplies the Akuaba doll...the woman carries the doll on her back, tied by a cloth in the position in which a real child is carried, until she becomes pregnant
