King Caesar's name and appearance were inspired by the Shisa, a mythological creature that resembles a cross between a dog and a lion. In the 1970s, Okinawan religion and culture were relatively unknown to American translators, who took the name "Shisa" to be a Japanization of the name "Caesar". King Caesar first appeared in the 1974 Showa film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. He then appeared thirty years later in the 2004 Millennium film Godzilla: Final Wars.
King Caesar is a massive, bipedal creature that appears to be a combination of a dog and a lion, with some distinctively reptilian attributes as well. He has large clumps of light brown fur growing on different areas of his body. He has clawed hands and feet, large dog-like ears, and a tail with a tuft of fur on the end. His skin is covered in brown armor-like scales, similar to reptiles. He has a row of gems on his head that form a shape resembling a crown.
