Mid-spring finds many pendent clusters of white flowers on the drooping branches of the black cherry. Not its only ornamental feature, small edible red to black fruits ripen in late summer and its foliage is semi-glossy and becomes yellow and orange in autumn. A fast-growing oval-canopied deciduous tree.
The leaves are tapered ovals with teeth on their edges. Colored medium to deep green, they have a satiny finish even after they first emerge with a bronzy cast. In mid- to late spring, finger-like pendent clusters of white five-petaled flowers line the downward-angled branches, attracting bees and butterflies for pollination. The small, round violet-red fruits ripen in late summer to nearly black and are the size of peas on long branched stems. In autumn the foliage attains attractive shades of yellow and orange and is a nice foil against the rustic gray-brown bark that is scaly and peeling.
Grow black cherry in full sun to light shade in any fertile, deep soil that is moist but not waterlogged. Best in non-alkaline soils, this rapidly growing tree tolerates both salt and drought. Use it as a large shade tree for meadows, lawns and large parks where its many seedlings are not bothersome or are readily tackled by the lawnmower. Alongside highways it has a stately presence with elegant and gently sagging branches. The small fruits are edible, especially once ripened fully to black if one can harvest them before the keen songbirds.
