This is a beautiful Ganesh Elephant Jade Carving from China. The detail of the Ganesh inside is amazing. Ganesh is know as the destroyer of obstacles. I knew I had to buy this piece on my travels for someone that would love to have it. The last pcture shows the back of the carving.
I believe the Jade is Nephrite Jade. I had done some studying of the different kinds of Jade and Nephrite is primarily the kind of Jade found in China.
I thought it was very clever to carve the Deity inside the stone this gives it almost on could say a little shrine or house as well as protecting it from nicks or damage. Jade is quite tough and difficly to break or scratch so this should always be easy to transport and move avoiding damage. A wonderful carving.
My guess about the slice mark on the back of the stone is that they cut into it when the rock is found to check that it is truly jade or determine the color or quality. I picked up a few of these carvings and they all have a cut in the back similar to this.
No chips or damage
Stone Size: 3.2'' tall and 3.2" wide ( 8.6 cm tall and 8.1 cm wide ) total stone. Diety size 1.5" tall and 1.2" wide ( 4.1 cm tall and 3 cm wide.
