Joe Hickey (Kevin Bacon, who always seems right at home playing these kinds of characters), is in the business of kidnapping the children of very wealthy people for ransom. He succeeds by personally overseeing the details, and not allowing any other people to come into play than whom he wishes to be involved (in other words, no cops).
Assisting him in his work are his wife, Cheryl (Courtney Love), and cousin Marvin (Pruitt Taylor Vince).
Joe's target is the child of research physician Will Jennings (Stuart Townsend), who has just patented a new anesthetic drug. While Jennings is attending a conference where he discusses his recent breakthrough, his wife, Karen (Charlize Theron), a former nurse, is now a stay-at-home mom, taking care of their daughter, Abby (Dakota Fanning).
Joe and Marvin kidnap Abby from her home, with Joe staying behind to keep watch on Karen, while Cheryl attends the conference to keep tabs on Will.
The rest of the film shifts between the three groups: Joe and Karen, Will and Cheryl, & Marvin and Abby and the dynamic of each pair as the kidnappers attempt to follow their careful schedule while the Jennings family tries to thwart their plans and discover the true purpose of the kidnappers.
Complicating the situation is Abby's severe asthma, which the kidnappers were unaware of in their intel on the Jennings family. With Abby being watched over in a separate location by Marvin, and her medicine in the Jennings home with Joe and Karen, the kidnappers must be careful to keep Abby's asthma under control until they can accomplish their ultimate goal.
