AND USAGE
  • Hardback book with Dust Jacket by LIEUTENANT COMMANDER LELAND P. LOVETTE, U.S. NAVY
  • Over 400 pages
  • Third edition published May 1939; Reprinted December, 1942
  • COPYRIGHT 1934, 1936, and 1939 BY U.S. NAVAL INSTITUTE

" " Lieutenant Commander Lovette has contributed to the literature of the service, in this unusual and entertaining book, a work of permanent value.
It should be in the library of every naval officer.
This information it contains will be indispensable to every student of naval subjects.
The author is to be congratulated on his masterly exploration of a field which hitherto has escaped the attention of naval writers.
A study of Commander Lovette's book will go far toward correcting imperfect technique and will be a fair wind to a knowledge of the history and meaning of its customs. "

ALBERT GLEAVES
Admiral, U.S. Navy (Retired) "

" " Nothing of the sort, at least upon the same scale, has been published in the United States in the past, and nothing was more sorely needed ...
The author has got together material, some of it coming from obscure and half-forgotten sources, and put it together with skill. "

H.L. MENCKEN in Baltimore Sun "

" " I have been so fortunate in being given the opportunity to read Lieutenant Commander Lovette's book in advance of its publication.
I cannot resist the urge to recommend to all naval personnel and to all civilians who are in any way interested in the Navy that they read the book throughout-not a single page should be passed over.
I can guarantee that the readers will be fully repaid by the pleasure and information and knowledge that they will gain thereby. "

J.K. TAUSSIG
Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy "

" " Of the books I have read recently, this has been the most consistently absorbing. "

CAPTAIN FELIX RIESENBERG
in Nautical Gazette "

" " This book is certainly a valuable addition to our great library of the sea and deserves to be widely read. "

Nautical Magazine (British) "

" The range of this book is as sweeping as the sea itself.
Pre-eminently a book for the Navy and those who love the Navy, it is nevertheless a volume so varied in its subject matter, so interesting in its treatment, that no one who has left the surge of the blue water can afford to be without it. "

HANSON W. BALDWIN
in New York Herald Tribune "
