" a reference work of supreme importance
for better understanding of progress in
every field of science "
alphabetically arranged for instant reference

fascinating non-technical writing for reading pleasure "

The inside of the dust jacket says:

" More than ever before, science now touches our life at every turn.
Everything we live by, and everything we hope to live by tomorrow -
the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the books and newspapers we read, the television set and the medicines and the trains and planes and automobiles we use - all will come to use from the knowledge we have of our physical universe; knowledge amassed by research in every scientific area. "

" Today the pace of science has speeded up enormously.
The twentieth century has seen the discovery of the neutron, the meson, the electron tube, atomic fission.
It has telescoped distance with jet-propelled planes, and has given us amazing things to wear and use, such as synthetic fibers and plastics.
In house and farm, revolutions have been wrought by electrical appliances, mechanical refrigeration, the power tractor. "

" To comprehend these extraordinary changes affecting every area of our lives - to have a proper understanding of our world today - we need knowledge of basic scientific principles, the foundation of our present-day achievements. "

" A book of such a scope is urgently needed, not only for the man who wants to be informed, but for the parent who wants to expose his child to science for career guidance;
and of course for the businessman who sees corporate earnings affected by scientific discoveries.
For them - for anyone in our constantly changing world - a background book presenting broad aspects of science is essential. "

" THE ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MODERN SCIENCE - in this large, handsome, compact volume - provides quick and comprehensible information in every important area of scientific knowledge.
Edited and illustrated from a nontechnical viewpoint, it presents the facts clearly and lucidly so you will be able to grasp the essence and significance of each subject. "

" Illustrations, photographs, drawings and color plates clarify and illuminate the text. "

" Because many readers are interested in browsing through particular topics, the editors have added a feature to facilitate this purpose.
The boxed number or numbers at the head of each article indicate the fields to which it pertains, according to a simple key.
Thus, the reader interested in biology, for example, may leaf through the pages watching for the number 7, his clue to material pertinent to the general field of biology.
