The magical story of a woman's love for her doctor and the child who led them to happiness.

Some women refuse to admit they are in love and try to hide the truth that sings in their hearts even from themselves.  Josephine Willard tried to deny love for her personal physician even though she knew her husband Sam was unfaithful to her.  Living in Greenwich Village, with Sam trying to write a novel that never came off, and working long hours at her music to give her daughter Deborah the security of a happy childhood, Josephine could hardly help longing for love and appreciation.

The afternoon she walked with Deborah in the park and met Dr. Cy Kinsman from her home town in Colorado was a turning point in Josephine's life.  She hadn't realized how hard she had tried to put Cy out of her mind.  After all he had been in love with her sister back in Custis and had completely overlooked Josephine during the years of her childhood.  Now her sister had married another and Cy, head surgeon at New York's biggest hospital, was alone, unattached and as desirable as ever.

That first meet was formal and restrained to the extreme and yet Josephine soon found that her physical health required repeated medical attention.  And of course Cy was her logical choice for a physician.  Could it be she was feigning illness to have Cy near her?  And was the brilliant Dr. Kinsman hiding behind medical ethics to escape the human miracle of love?

This is even more than an appealing love story.  It is a dramatic picture of one of the most colorful epochs in American life.
