Book Club Edition

Wanted! is a true story, a shocking expose of government scandal and cover-up.  It is also a compelling, exciting detective story about four Nazis who came to this country after World War II, the life they led here, and the men who tracked them down.  The story of each of these Nazis reveals a record of stolen government files, unexplainable court and Immigration Service delays, State Department inaction, and special Congressional friends.  Wanted! establishes that agencies of the U.S. government are not only uninterested in prosecuting war criminals living in this country, but also have actively conspired to allow Nazis to live out there lives with impunity in the United States.

In a dramatic narrative, prize-winning journalist Howard Blum focuses on the movements of Immigration Service investigator Anthony DeVito, who becomes the pivotal figure in the attempt to track down the Nazis and bring them to justice.  DeVito, following his successful work to deport concentration camp guard Hermine Braunsteiner Ryan, obtains a list of 59 Nazi war criminals living in this country.  He becomes totally dedicated to the search for these Nazis but is constantly stymied -- by the U.S. government.  In time DeVito comes to the chilling conclusion that "an Odessa organization has infiltrated the inner reaches of our government."

DeVito's search -- which soon takes on aspects of a mission -- leads him to the four Nazis Wanted! treats in detail:  a New Jersey county official, prospering and protected by the Passaic County Democratic machine; a Detroit bishop whose estate-like episcopate is inhabited with "priests" who are actually members of a war-time Nazi organization; a California businessman living on the shores of the Pacific as a respected member of the community, a friend of priests and Congressmen; and a retired Long Island carpenter, a man living with the knowledge that he once helped to liquidate a village of 2,000 people.

DeVito's investigation also brings him in contact with the men who originally hunted these Nazis and who now demand vengeance:  a 78-year-old dentist who has written more than 3,000 letters to federal authorities; a retired policeman who accidentally discovers an SS man living in New Jersey; a New York restauranteer, a concentration camp victim who tracked down the man he saw murder his mother 35 years before.

The Odessa File and The Boys From Brazil were works of fiction; Wanted! shows that the truth is still stranger and more exciting.
