A courageous American mother and child outwit the Nazis in a daring escape from Hitler's Europe.

When the heel-clicking German staff arrived at Chateau L'Ormeau to demand living quarters, they were surprised to find that the Countess was an American and as imperious as she was charming.  What they did not know was that her husband was a prisoner of war and that inwardly she was trembling with fear.  Yet she held her head high inspired by her small daughter, Rose-Helene, who time after time had inspired her mother's courageous acts.  Rose-Helene's confident smile, facing the upheavals in the mad adult world around her, made it impossible for her mother to show fear or falter.

Margaret Vail (or the Countess de Vigny -- both pen names used to protect loved ones still in France) tells a personal heart-warming story of her life with Rose-Helene during the time of Nazi domination -- a time when food supplies dwindled to rutabagas, when a year's clothing ration purchased only part of a coat lining.  You will admire her determined efforts to free her husband; thrill to her escape across the "line of demarcation"; you will hold your breath as they make their perilous climb over the Pyrenees, 8,000 feet high in bitter cold, with Nazi soldiers ready to intern them if caught.  Giving a clear and factual picture of France in her darkest hour, this book reveals how individuals with supreme courage are continuing to thwart Nazi oppression.  It is a warm, powerful, human story of a child's abiding faith and a mother torn between the desire to be near her husband and the need to give her daughter the birthright of freedom.
