When they left the steamy, seamy town that marked the last outpost of civilization, their expedition was well equipped -- perhaps, suggested Joshua Smith, whose signature was on the checks, even overequipped.  They had the helicopter, the hovercraft, the impostors, and mixed motives.  They were prepared for anything.

But most of them had never ventured into the Brazilian rain forest.  They could not imagine what awaited them; those who survived would never forget.  The Mato Grosso offered riches, rapids, ravines, mud flats blanketed by the sluggish bodies of a thousand crocodiles, lazy eddies where the piranha lurked ready to strip any prey to the bone in seconds. Beneath their feet, solid ground could turn to quicksand in the space of a step, and above their heads a canopy of foliage hid the draped coils of the anaconda.

But there were deadlier dangers -- for example, the Chapates, forest people with curare-dipped darts; the Horena, who used blow darts only to stun . . . they wanted their victims to feel the exquisite torture of a slow death.  And there were the members of the expedition itself.

Not one was who he -- or she -- claimed to be.  Each had a reason to seek the Lost City of the Amazon.  But there were those who would wish they had never succeeded in finding it.
