At the age of twenty-four, John Nichols showed the polish and sophistication of a seasoned novelist -- his touch sure, his wit sharp, and Pookie Adams, his heroine, a pure original.

When she first stumbles on the hero, Jerry Payne, waiting at a cross-country bus stop, he sees only a skinny, scrubby-haired girl, balancing a toothpick on her tongue. Then she bursts into speech and Jerry -- like the reader -- remains bewitched until the last syllable. Her pursuit of Jerry is launched with the same determination that as a child won her twenty-seven cents for eating seven worms and a grub. When fate places the couple at neighboring Eastern colleges, Jerry succumbs to his first frantic affair.

Ivory towers fade in the background as Pookie and Jerry picnic in graveyards, shoot crows from his fraternity house window, and drive through a snowstorm in a refrigerated tomb on wheels known as the "screaming bitch." As their romances plunges into its second year, they make a final attempt to slow to a more normal pace, but on a New York weekend, somewhat the worse for an overindulgence in Tiki Puka Pukas, their affair staggers to a close.

Warm, alive, and not so far from the truth as many would like to suppose, The Sterile Cuckoo is an unforgettable story by a young writer of bright accomplishment and promise.
