Book Club Edition

When the Trans Air flight from Tangier is hijacked, it has in its first-class compartment many distinguished passengers, among them former senator J. Milton Prestone; Portuguese financier Cristobal Helenez; American businessman Jonah Graham; and millionaire Jack Mofferty, traveling with his new and much younger wife, Sonja.

The first-class passengers are in particular peril, for when the plane lands in New York, the coach passengers are released, and they alone must face the fanaticism of the hijackers and the danger of a any rescue attempt. Yet when the rescue does come, engineered by hostage-release expert Lieutenant Raymond Hyte of the NYPD, all are freed, the hijackers are killed, and the trauma is over.

Or is it?

For soon after the rescue, a serial killer, working with brilliance and the utmost ruthlessness, begins murdering the passengers, and it is soon apparent that no one will be spared -- unless the killer turns out to be one of the passengers.

It is Raymond Hyte's task to catch the killer, the urgency of which is intensified because he has fallen in love with the daughter of one of the intended victims. The battle between them -- ingenious murderer, master policeman -- makes up the core of this enthralling thriller, while its climax is as unexpected as it is fair.

David Milton has written an engrossing story with tremendous pace and authenticity of detail. It is a book to be savored, although perhaps not on a plane from Tangier.
