This gorgeous vintage Imari porcelain soap dish is an unusual find. It is from an estate sale and I believe it dates to the 1950s or possibly earlier. On the inside, it features a pair of beautiful peacocks of Birds of Paradise heavily accented in gold gilt. They are surrounded by lovely flowers. The front of the piece has another beautiful bouquet of flowers. The colors include shades of pink, red, yellow, blue, green, black, and white on a cream background. The leaves and flowers are also accented with gold gilt and there is gilt trim around the scalloped rim.
The dish measures approximately 5 5/16 inches long, 3 1/2 inches wide, and 1 3/8 inches high. It weighs 1/2 pound and is backstamped Made In Japan in Red Letters. There a raised and grooved area in the center to help the soap dry out better. It has wonderful overall crazing which gives character to pieces of this age, a bit of wear top the gilt trim around its rim, and a very tiny bit of shelf wear on the bottom. No chips, cracks, or other issues. The colors are vivid and unfaded and there is a nice high glaze. The peacocks and flower design has lots of gorgeous little details. Please view both photos.
