This listing is for a vintage hardcover book, entitled 21 Kinds of American Folk Art and How to Make Each One. The book was written by Jean and Cle Kinney. The copyright of this book is 1972. The book has 121 pages. What is amazing about this book to me, is the statement inside the book listing the well respected institutions that co-operated with this book. The inside of the book says ‘We could not have produced this book without the cooperation of the Museum of the American Indian, the New York Historical Society, the Museum of Modern Art and the American Museum of Natural History, New York City; the Smithsonian Institute and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Shelburne Museum, Vermont, The New Milford Historical society, the Danbury Library and the Mystic Seaport Museum, Connecticut, and others who provided the source material and photographs listed in the back of this book.’ What an impressive list! The book flap indicates that for each of the folk arts represented, it is told who practiced the art, and when and where and sometimes why. There are pictures of good examples of the craft. Then there are instructions for creating similar versions, sometimes in much the same way the old ones were made, sometimes using materials and techniques the old makers did not have. The folk art included in this book is Rock Art; Petroglyphs and Pictographs, Carvings of Ivory, Bone and Stone from Alaskan Eskimos, Handmade Pottery, Wood Carvings, Dolls, Bedcovers and Rugs, Decorations on Furniture, Floors and Walls, Painting on Glass, Scrimshaw, Calligraphy, Chalk Figures and Wax Fruit, Handmade Instruments, Portraits and Silhouettes, Gilding, Jazz, Tap Dancing, Comic Strips, Motion Pictures, Silk Screen Stenciling, and Mobiles. So clearly this book has a wide ranging as well as diverse and eclectic group of folk art covered in it. That is certainly a lot to cover in 121 pages. This book has a lot of excellent quality black and white photographs in it. This book is in good condition, considering it’s age. However, there is wear to the dust jacket. There is surface wear, and some areas where the color looks faded. There are a several rips, and a slit right at the front of the dust jacket. The outside edges of the book pages look slightly discolored in some areas. The last two pages of the book are bent up at the corner. Smoke and pet free home.
