The book flap says ‘Lawrence Jeppson tells of the brilliant and resourceful craftsmen and dealers of the world of antiques who fooled the experts, and whose forgeries were rarely detected by any flaw in their work. In fact, their creations were often proclaimed as being long lost masterpieces. Some master forgers became so proud of their work that they felt themselves compelled to tell the world. Others wanted to make fools of the art critics, or even bring ruin to accomplices.’ It continues on to say that ‘The author has investigated a wide range of frauds which include some brilliant forgeries in gold, outstanding forgeries from the Renaissance, the famous battle of the Van Gogh experts, the Millet family affair, the hoax that fooled the Metropolitan Museum and many others. He concludes his work with an enlightening chapter on ‘Judging Fakes.’’
Overall, this book is in good vintage condition. The book does not look like it was ever read, or even opened much. However, as can be seen in the photo, the dust jacket has a large rip on the front of it, with a large area of the dust jacket being missing. The dust jacket also has rips on the back, some surface wear, and creasing along the outside edges of the dust jacket. The bottom corners of the book itself look slightly bumped, and the bottom edges of the book look slightly worn. There is a black marker mark across the top outside edge of the book pages, next to the spine. There is a stamp on the title page listing the former owners name and address.
