eBlueJay: Vintage European Majolica Figural Fisherman Decanter

For sale is a vintage European majolica figural fisherman decanter. The figurine is of an elderly male. He has a beard, and is smoking a pipe. He is wearing a scarf around his neck, and mittens and boots. He is carrying a fisherman’s net. The statue has a piece of cork inside the head, which looks as if it was broken off. I have been told this was most likely a decanter which may have had a hat originally attached to the cork. The broken off cork could probably be taken out of the figurine, and replaced with a new cork, if desired. The figurine is still attractive, in my opinion, even though it may be missing a hat. It would look very striking on display. The figurine is empty; there is no liquid inside it. The figurine measures approximately 11.25 inches tall. The figurine has a nice weight to it. It is very nicely done, and well painted, with attractive colors. I noticed that some of the photos of close-ups of the mans top show some brownish areas. That is not an accurate depiction of the color. The man’s top has no brown areas on it. That is the result of camera flash. This decanter appears to have some measure of handcrafting, as there are markings at the base of the figurine, which appear to be written by hand. There are the initials HB, some other writing I can’t see clearly, and a number. I think the number is 2750, but I am not sure of the third number. The writing looks to be in German. The writing appears to start off with gesc and end with gesch. In between there is some writing that I can’t make out. It says something similar to Gesctzl Gesch, which evidently is short for Gesetzlich Geschutzt. There is a shallow crack in the glaze on the base, at the center left hand side, as can be seen in the photo. This piece is in very good condition, in my opinion, despite some flaws. The cork at the top of the figurine is broken off. I am not sure if this is actually a flaw, but there is a small round hole in the center back of the head, which cork shows through. This hole might serve a purpose. There is some minor crazing in the glaze. The crazing seems to be specific to the green and brown shaded color that makes up areas of the base and whatever the figurine is leaning against. There is a small chip on the front arm, where the glaze is off and there is a small white dot there. I have included a photograph of this area. The 7th picture down shows the chip. It is on the arm on the left side of the photo, right above the elbow.
