Description : From the jacket flaps…
For Dermot Davey, the trip to Belfast could hardly be called a sentimental journey to the Ould Sod. Dermot is a twenty-nine-year-old New York City cop who is in trouble. His parochial Brooklyn schooling and New York Irish heritage have prepared him for little besides a badge, but after eight years on the force he finds he has nothing better to look forward to than retirement at forty-one at half-pay.

He’s a lousy husband and a lousy father, and he’s apt to forget what happens when he drinks, which is often, so he’s a pretty lousy cop. The department officials often consider him too unstable to carry a gun. That makes him uneasy. Everything in Dermot Davey’s life makes him uneasy. The hop to Northern Ireland isn’t much of an escape, but it’s an out that Dermot grabs.

Of course he has to visit relatives, Catholic relatives – most especially the father he hasn’t seen in more than twenty years. In the embattled alleyways and barricaded pubs of Ulster, Dermot discovers that suddenly he’s part of the minority, and minority groups have never been his dish. His people are getting pushed around; some of them are getting killed. What bothers him even more is its familiarity: “A dirty street at night, emergency lights, people screaming, broken glass, uniforms in charge, this was where he had lived his life.”

Dermot still has his badge, which means nothing; he’s got a gun, which means a lot; there is also a girl, but she’s a Communist, and that’s a mortal sin. Dermot’s no born hero, but he’s odd man in. he allows the drama to play itself out; first in Ireland, finally at home in Queens. In the end, Dermot Davey has learned something about the devils in himself and how they have made his survival as tenuous as it is brutal.
