Walk Like A Man
A novel of the Civil War -- of courage and adventure -- and of the making of a man
by Donald Honig
Publisher: William Sloane Associates
Copyright:  1961
Book Club Edition

The perceptive and beautifully written story of the making of a man . . . of a young boy whose idealism and courage stand trial during the turbulent days of the Civil War.

Clay Taylor was the type of man women adored -- and other men either hated or envied. To sixteen-year-old Jeff, however, he was a god. Though Clay had been accused of being a Confederate spy -- indeed, the men of Capstone, Long Island were ready to hang him from the tree in Jeff's own front yard -- Jeff never lost faith in him, stoutly proclaiming Clay's courage and his loyalty to the Union cause.

Rachel, Jeff's lovely sister, shared her brother's devotion to the handsome young man. It was Rachel's love for Clay that precipitated a family crisis, and ibkt Clay himself could resolve it. Thus, Jeff set off for Virginia and Baker's station to find Clay and bring him back. With Jeff went his irrepressible, devil-may-care fiend, Pete Mariah -- a most delightful Huck Finn of a boy,

Their journey south on horseback had its moments of fun and deviltry, but the boys also ran up against dangerous men of varying allegiances, skirted battles, saw death on the field. Each event brought greater knowledge -- war no longer meant a grand and glorious game -- and greater maturity . . . a maturity that is ultimately tested at their final destination.

Exciting and dramatic, with flashes of riotous humor, Walk Like a Man is, overall, a sensitive portrayal of youth coming of age in the trying days of the Civil War.
