The Complete Book of Houseplants Under Lights
A Practical Illustrated Guide to Gardening Under Lights:  Selections of Plants, Equipment, Soil Mixtures, Containers, Maintenance, Propagation, Pest Control
by Charles Marden Fitch
Publisher: Hawthorn Books, Inc.
Copyright 1975

Light gardening has added tremendously to the pleasure and success of growing plants indoors, and the equipment and techniques for it have improved greatly in the last few years.  This book brings it all up to date with careful evaluation of the various lights, stands, and locations as Charles Marden Fitch tells how to achieve a wealth of colorful blooms and gorgeous foliages in artificially lighted areas.

Section I, "Basics of Light Gardening," deals with different kinds of lamps and reflectors (and today there are many), shows how to install them, how to decorate with multipurpose types to get dramatic effects, where to use lights, and how to custom-design light setups for complete indoor gardens.  The newest fixtures, carts, and stands are shown in effective use in the home.  The latest research findings are also included, simplified and condensed for practical application by the indoor gardener.

Section II, "Plants to Grow," covers culture for hundreds of species appropriate to light gardening with recommendations for day- and night-lenths, proper distances between foliage and lights -- often a problem -- and other specifics of culture.  The author gives many clues for success based on his own wide experience.  African-violets and other gesneriads, begonias, bromeliads, cacti, herbs, orchids (for bloom throughout the year), as well as handsome foliage plants and vines are considered in detail.

This book has ad advantage beyond all other discussions on light gardening in that the author's experience includes observations of plants in their habitats.  He has studied African-violets and Euphorbias in Africa, begonias in the Andes, orchids in the treetops of New Guinea and along the Amazon, cacti in their desert homes.  He has noted whether the natural situation is sunny or dim, wet or dry, in rich soil or lean.  These unique observations make the information in The Complete Book of Houseplants Under Lights notably reliable.
